KIM SLAVIN (Physio)

Kim Slavin MAPA studied at the Lincoln Institute in Melbourne and worked at several regional physiotherapy practices until she set up her own practice in Yea.

Kim was born to show jumping parents who also trained racehorses and started riding horses at an early age. She rode her first fast track work at 9 years of age and became an amateur jockey when she was 15 years old, continuing for 12 years.

Kim was an accomplished event rider, coming 3rd (from 85 riders) in her first three-day event at Darlington HT, 7th in the Australian open whilst 12 weeks pregnant and representing Victoria at the Gawler SA three day event at intermediate level riding Big Bertha.

She became a mother of four children and set up her own private practice in Yea in 1993, treating spinal and sporting injuries (amongst other things) including clients with riding-related problems.

Physiotherapists are experts in the structure of the human body and its movement. They work with people of all ages to treat a broad range of health conditions including sports injuries and musculoskeletal conditions as well as diseases and health conditions.

They can also help us to improve our strength, awareness and range of body movements to become a better rider. Kim is very experienced in both the physiological and biomechanical aspects of riding a horse.

“Getting both strength but especially fine control of the trunk muscles, is vital to develop what we call an ‘independent seat’, where your trunk gives you a stable base to use your arms and legs to give the aids to the horse.” Says Kim in her ‘Fitness for horse freaks’ article in the EFA Dressage Newsletter, Oct 2002. “Poor core stability can result in many different riding problems, from wobbling legs to flapping arms.”

Kim is available for individual physiotherapy sessions, where she will assess and treat you in relation to any issues you may be having. She can help you to understand your body position, biomechanics and breathing patterns and how they affect your riding.

Discover how good breathing patterns can enhance your connection with the horse and can improve your riding posture. Breathe right, ride right!
